One of London’s oldest gentlemen’s clubs now admits women. This was decided after an argument that bitterly divided the members. The Garrick Club is one of the last gentlemen’s clubs to open membership to the opposite sex.
Members of the Garrick Club, including artists Sting and Mark Knopfler, are said to have threatened to quit if the club continued to refuse women, British media reported. Ultimately, about 60 percent of the 1,500 members agreed.
The Garrick was founded in 1831 for actors and “men of refinement and education.” The club admitted women only as guests of men. A petition for women’s membership three years ago was supported by Cherie Blair, a leading lawyer married to former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Other prominent figures who are said to be members, because that is officially a secret, are Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch and politician Michael Gove. One of the first members was writer Charles Dickens.
