I wonder if you’re from the area. ASML gives back a lot to society in the Eindhoven region. From collaborations with schools to draw attention to pure technology, to sponsoring student teams to develop innovations that do not suit ASML, but ASML sees as an important social contribution.
ASML also pays a lot for the environment: from sponsoring local fairs and village festivals, to helping to pay for the construction of roads, or guaranteeing housing projects.
In addition, ASML is so large that a very large part of the region is directly or indirectly dependent on ASML. There are many suppliers for ASML, both for the products they make and for the facilities they need. Without ASML, a huge number of these local, smaller companies would have no right to exist.
If there is a large Dutch listed company that is not grabbing from society, it is ASML. Yes, they probably get a lot of subsidies for the development of their machines. However, ASML also sees their social importance, unlike some former Dutch companies that have now moved to the UK (Shell, Unilever) and only do so to appease their shareholders.
ASML is absolutely not a grab-and-go company. They make a major social contribution in the region, something I don’t see a lot of other listed companies doing. This contribution is absolutely not mandatory, but ASML still thinks that making it is better than just distributing profits to shareholders (“grabbing”), and if things go wrong, immediately moving abroad. Unlike Shell or Unilever, ASML looks at what the Netherlands can offer instead of going for profit and leaving.
I hope you will really look into the consequences if a company like ASML were to leave. Yes, it is also in their own interest to sponsor things in the region and provide social support, but as a company you can also choose not to do that and only benefit, something that ASML clearly does not choose to do .
