Directors Linda Hakeboom and Rolf Hartogensis have followed S10 for the documentary for years. They filmed Stien den Hollander, as her real name is, during her performance in front of 200 million people at the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin, but they also shot at her home. According to the EO, this results in ‘a penetrating and sensitive portrait of a young woman who takes her career to a higher level in the eye of the storm’.

Confronting demons

The common thread of the film is the mental problems that S10 struggled with as an adolescent. She ended up in various youth institutions. “She will carry the events from those years with her for the rest of her life,” say the makers. “As her fame continues to grow, the past begins to eat away at her more and more. She increasingly asks herself whether it is bad to hide your traumas. Does she have to confront her demons, or can’t she handle it?” In addition to the influence of her past, the documentary also portrays the pressure from the media and the public.

When she was 15, the singer saw the documentary that Linda Hakeboom had made about singer Jett Rebel (real name Jelte Tuinstra). “When I saw Jelte, he touched me deeply. I thought: maybe I can do this too,” says S10. “Maybe even with all the shit going on there is a possibility to keep going, to make music and just write and sing. Something that has saved me every day for seven years. Even if this documentary about me could do to one person what it did to me when I watched Jelte, I would be very honored.”
