A mansion full of history is for sale in the city center of Groningen. The price of this ‘Funda pearl’ at Herestraat 88: 1,975,000 euros.

The mansion consists of a front house from the 18th century and a rear house from the 16th century. The mayor is said to have lived here in the 19th century. This was followed by a Groningen family, and at the end of the 20th century it was an office of a real estate agency.

The three-storey national monument has seven bedrooms, two bathrooms – a total living area of 458 square meters – and a very large backyard by city standards.

The house has a high museum quality. That starts with the 25 meter corridor. The walls are decorated with ornaments of ‘representations of musical instruments from the Renaissance’ and the (high) ceilings are also richly decorated.

The floor is made of marble. There are also marble fireplaces spread throughout the house and this building block is extensively used in the kitchen.

Gardens are heaven for birds

And then the garden. You rarely see them in this size in the middle of the city center: 150 square meters in size and surrounded by walls. The ‘beautiful trees’ are according to Funda a paradise for birds and form ‘an unexpected oasis of peace in the lively city center’.

After a summer rain shower it smells wonderfully of forest and on a quiet summer day you can pick figs and lemons from the trees.

But there are more places where it is great to spend summer time. The balcony, for example, or the courtyard, right next to the kitchen. The kitchen consists of a mantelpiece containing a stove and a sink from the 16th century.

View of shopping streets

The view from the different rooms is impressive. From the work/study room you look out onto the Herestraat and the former Nieuwsblad van het Noorden building on the Gedempte Zuiderdiep, and from the backyard you can walk straight into the Gedempte Zuiderdiep or other shopping streets.

The energy label remains unmentioned on Funda.
