VVD Midden-Groningen is afraid that the advice from Groningen Bereikbaar to avoid the city of Groningen because of the approach to the Southern Ring Road will have a negative effect on the recreational sector. VVD faction leader Marjolein Vulpes raises the alarm with her mayor and aldermen about this through written questions (Is Groningen Bereikbaar chasing away tourists?).
Work on the Southern Ring Road started 7 years ago.
Traffic jam
Vulpes: “As it now appears, the final phase has been reached with an announced ‘traffic disruption’ from March 22 to September 2. Groningen Bereikbaar is the platform through which travelers are warned and informed about the most current state of affairs. At the moment The commercials are even broadcast throughout the Netherlands.”
Avoid
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and travel by bicycle as much as possible. “That is good, but it can also have a negative effect on the recreational sector. Tourists may be deterred by this reporting and choose a short or long holiday in another area.”
Entrepreneurs
Vulpes says that so much is being invested in recreational opportunities in the province of Groningen and its municipality. “We want to introduce as many tourists as possible to all the beauty that Groningen, and especially our municipality, has to offer. We have spoken to entrepreneurs who are concerned about this side effect.”
Scare
“In principle, our municipality is easily accessible for tourists. But when people talk about Groningen, this also reflects on our municipality.” The Liberals are curious whether there is a way to warn travelers about traffic disruption on the Southern Ring Road without deterring tourists.
Adjust spot
Vulpes wants to know from her council whether there has already been contact with colleagues from the municipality of Groningen about this possible negative side effect. If this is not the case, VVD Midden-Groningen hopes that Mayor Adriaan Hoogendoorn and co will enter into discussions with Groningen Bereikbaar to adjust the commercial. Finally, Vulpes also wants to know whether other municipalities or entrepreneurs have already raised this problem with Midden-Groningen.
