In North Brabant, 78.5% of burglary attempts were successful in 2023; more than 200 reports in Breda

In 2023, 78.5% of burglary attempts in North Brabant were successful: in these cases, burglars managed to enter the home and steal something.

Burglars appear to be the most successful in Maashorst: here – for burglars – even 90% of all burglaries are successful. This and more is evident from Independer’s Home Burglaries Index based on a Woo request submitted to the Police.

Burglars are the most successful in Brabant

In North Brabant, burglars struck 3,070 times last year. During 78.5% of these incidents, criminals managed to actually gain entry and steal property. The other registered reports only involved a burglary attempt. In Brabant, burglars are slightly more successful with this than elsewhere in the country. The average pass rate in the Netherlands is 76.5%.

“When claiming damage, the insurer will always check whether the house was properly closed. They actually want to see that you have done everything to prevent a burglary. There are also insurers who give a discount on the premium if you have demonstrably taken extra safety measures,” explains Michel Ypma, home insurance expert at Independer.

Pass rate: there are big differences locally

Of all Brabant municipalities with 25 or more reports in 2023, burglars appear to be the most successful in Maashorst. Here, criminals managed to enter a home and steal something in 90% of the cases. Burglary attempts are also more likely to succeed in Halderberge (89.3%) and Tilburg (85.8%) than elsewhere in the province.

The success rate is the lowest in Oisterwijk (65.8%) and Geldrop-Mierlo (71.1%). In these municipalities, relatively more often it remains an attempt. Curious about the figures in your municipality? Then check the Home Burglaries Index on the Independer website.

Most burglaries in Eindhoven

Burglars struck most often in Eindhoven last year. There were 361 reports of a burglary or attempted burglary in this municipality. There were also many incidents in Tilburg (337) and Breda (236) in 2023. There was better news for residents of Zundert (9): burglars struck here least often.

Particular success in zip codes with cheaper housing

In 2023, burglars were most often successful in homes with a lower WOZ value. In postal codes where houses have an average WOZ of up to 200,000 euros, burglars are successful in 78.2%. In homes with a WOZ of 200,000 to 250,000, this even concerns 78.9% of the incidents. By comparison: in postal codes with mainly expensive homes (of 750,000 or more), ‘only’ 73.9% of burglary attempts are successful.

Home insurance expert Michel Ypma: “Even if the attempted burglary fails, I always recommend reporting it to the police. They know that thieves are active in the area, but it is also necessary for your own insurance. If you want to recover burglary damage from the insurer, a declaration is required.”
