According to director Walter Van de Griendt, there are many aspects that have made Morres a success. Of course the unique collection that was made in-house, but the location in Hulst also played a role. For example, in the opening years, butter smuggling was attractive to Flemish people. Just across the border, the price was a lot lower, so many southern neighbors came to the city and immediately came into contact with the furniture store.
Morres was opened in 1909 by Fré Morres. There is a workshop for furniture makers in a small building in the center on the Grote Bagijnestraat in Hulst. Later there will also be a shop with a display window where just one chair fits. Almost ten years later, Fré opens a new store in Bontehondstraat. Furniture is made and upholstered at that location with approximately twelve employees.
In the 1940s, sons Jo and Antoine joined the business. The brothers first trained as furniture makers. The two then emerge as a duo with organizational, financial and creative qualities. Through their many travels they gain plenty of inspiration, such as a large showroom, as they see in America.
