Not 68 million euros, but a paltry 4 million. The province of Zeeland is disappointed with the amount that the government makes available for the leading projects within the Zeeland Area Program.

“The amount of 4 million euros made available to Zeeland deviates considerably from the requested 68 million,” writes King’s Commissioner Han Polman in a letter to outgoing Minister Christianne van der Wal (Nature and Nitrogen). ‘We are disappointed because this limited contribution is not a reflection of our efforts and does not contribute to support for the Zeeland area program and the measures yet to be taken.’

The financial setback is partly due to the fact that Zeeland has no priority areas and all water measures in the first selection of LNV fall by the wayside. The province is committed to arable farming and nature measures.

Of all provinces, Zeeland receives by far the smallest budget from the government for the agricultural and nature measures to be taken. An important reason for this is that the province has no priority areas and that water measures are not included in the selection criteria.
