It is a bright day and on Victory Square they are having fun playing with the neighborhood children on the climbing frame.

The boy in the middle of the photo holds his hand over his eyes. Is it for the sun, or does he not want to be photographed? Some children wear roller skates to enjoy themselves on the square.

The photo was probably used for a planning or advertising publication by the municipality of Groningen.

Centers in Vinkhuizen, Paddepoel and Selwerd would follow

The Overwinningsplein Shopping Center was completed in the early 1960s and was the first shopping center in a suburb in Groningen. Centers in Vinkhuizen, Paddepoel and Selwerd would follow.

When it opens, the center will have all kinds of shops with homes above them, a church, a community center of the Green Cross and a daycare center. In a newspaper article looking back on fifteen years of Overwinningsplein, the center is a success, and in particular the market on Wednesdays, which provides a lot of liveliness.

Climbing equipment and flower boxes

In the middle is a lowered square with an edge to sit on and climbing equipment. There are flower boxes with young trees and one older silver birch.

Nowadays there is no longer any playground equipment on the square, it now accommodates cars for shoppers. Yet it remains a lively place, with a market on Wednesdays after all these years.
