There is a fuss in Rijswijk surrounding the organization of the Eritrean Liberation Day. The municipality bans the party, but the event location where it would take place disagrees. This is evident from a letter in the hands of Broadcasting West.

The celebration of the Eritrean Liberation Day would take place on May 25 in the Rijswijk Event Plaza, which is part of HTC Horeca BV. It was expected that around seven to nine hundred visitors would attend.

But on Tuesday, Rijswijk mayor Huri Sahin put an end to the event. The municipality points to the disturbances during the celebration of the liberation festival last year and to riots that broke out at an Eritrean meeting in The Hague in February.

In a letter to the municipality, HTC Horeca BV now states that it does not agree with that decision. According to the company’s lawyer, the celebration is a private gathering protected by law. The catering company receives support from the Federation of Eritrean Communities in the Netherlands (FEN), which reported the party to the municipality.

The municipality does not want to respond

It is a private meeting and therefore not an event, FEN reasons. The fact that the party is private is evident from the fact that “the invited visitors will be dropped off in an organized manner by bus at the Event Plaza parking lot,” writes Broadcasting West. Furthermore, “only invited guests are welcome at this party.”

The municipality of Rijswijk does not yet want to respond to NU.nl about the position of the catering company and FEN. A spokesperson also does not want to comment on the claim that the gathering is protected by law.

HTC Horeca BV gives according to Broadcasting West to want to sit down with Mayor Sahin. But if she persists, the company threatens to go to administrative law.
