It was already known that Wout van Aert suffered several fractures from his heavy fall in Dwars door Vlaanderen, but the damage appears to be greater than initially communicated. The Belgian from Visma | In addition to his collarbone and no fewer than seven ribs, Lease a Bike also broke his sternum. That reports The last news.

Van Aert crashed on Wednesday with 67 kilometers to go. In the descent towards the Kanarieberg he crashed at high speed together with, among others, Mads Pedersen, Jasper Stuyven and Biniam Girmay. It was immediately clear that the damage to Van Aert was extensive. The Belgian was seriously grazed on the back and lay on the asphalt moaning and crying in pain. He therefore left the match and was taken to hospital.

At the hospital, a broken collarbone was initially diagnosed, as well as several broken ribs. It goes according to HLN to no fewer than nine broken bones: his collarbone, sternum and seven ribs.

It is still unclear exactly how long Van Aert will have to recover, says Visma | Lease a Bike know, but he will in any case have to put an end to his main goals in the spring: the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. The Amstel Gold Race will also be deleted from its program and the Giro d’Italia now also seems to come too early.

Further damage
The massive crash during Dwars door Vlaanderen has not only put an end to Wout van Aert’s spring plans. We will also no longer see Jasper Stuyven in action during the big spring classics. The semi-leader of Lidl-Trek suffered a broken collarbone in the crash. Mads Pedersen and Biniam Girmay escaped with abrasions and bruises.
