The Public Prosecution Service has asked the judge to immediately dismiss the board of the Islamic School Amsterdam Foundation, which includes the As-Siddieq schools in the city.

Since the beginning of this year, the school umbrella organization has received less money from the Ministry of Education due to financial and administrative mismanagement. In January and February, schools therefore received only 40 percent of government funding. Later that dropped to 20 percent. As a result, the schools are in danger of going bankrupt in the short term.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the board is acting so contrary to the interests of the foundation, the students and teachers of the schools, that she must resign as quickly as possible. “A new temporary board will have to be appointed by the judge so that the financing of the school can be restarted. This can guarantee the continuity of education,” the Public Prosecution Service said.

No money

The ISA Foundation, which includes the As-Siddieq schools al Yaqoet, al Maes and al Jawhara, has been under the so-called financial restriction since January. According to the education inspectorate, the quality of the lessons is sufficient, but there may be administrative misconduct.

The school umbrella organization therefore only received 40 percent of government funding in January and February. Later that dropped to 20 percent.

Pause button

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Education says that the government is currently awaiting the court’s ruling, but that a temporary board is ready when the current board resigns.

If this happens, the sanctions the school has now received will be temporarily stopped. “We have a pause button to give any new board the space to put things in order,” says the spokesperson.

The board of the school umbrella organization was not yet available for comment.
