King Willem-Alexander is proud of all the children who participate in the King’s Games on Friday. In an interview with Zappsport, which made a special episode about the King’s Games, the royal couple told what they think of the annual sports day.

“I am particularly proud of the 1.3 million children in the Kingdom of the Netherlands,” said Willem-Alexander. He praises all children in the European Netherlands and the Caribbean Netherlands and finds it special “that more than 6,000 schools participate and that so many parents and teachers are involved and make it a very wonderful day.”

According to the king, the achievements of Dutch top athletes are also thanks to these types of events. “That starts at school and with days like these King’s Games, but it also starts at the clubs. To be strong at the top of the pyramid, you need to have a very broad base. That is why the importance of recreational sport is just as important as top sport.”

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima opened the King’s Games in Hoofddorp on Friday morning. It is the twelfth edition of the sports day, which was introduced in 2013 in connection with the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander.
