Meta will equip the Ray-Ban Smart Glasses with AI image recognition next month. This allows the smart glasses to identify objects, monuments and animals, and translate texts. The function has been tested by a small group of users since December.

The New York Times writes that the multimodal AI functions will officially come to Meta smart glasses next month. The Ray-Ban Smart Glasses use the front cameras and image recognition software to interpret what the user is looking at. The digital assistant, Meta AI, can then answer the user’s questions. For example, the glasses can explain which building, animal or work of art the user is standing in front of.

Tests by the American newspaper show that the smart glasses do not work well in all cases. For example, the Ray-Ban Smart Glasses would have difficulty identifying some zoo animal species that are at the back of their enclosure. It also failed to properly recognize some types of exotic fruit, such as cherimoya, after several attempts. The glasses are able to translate texts, although only English, Spanish, Italian, French and German are supported.

Ever since the arrival of smart glasses in September last year, Meta has been promising that image recognition software is on the way. The digital assistant could already be used to answer questions from users, but not yet about objects that the user sees in front of him. The Meta AI software is also available on the company’s Quest VR glasses and within apps such as WhatsApp and Instagram, although the feature is not yet available in all countries. Meta released its first smart glasses in 2021, the Ray-Ban Stories.
