The Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) found an explosive device in Franeker this afternoon. The explosive was found near the Kaats Museum, where there was an explosion last night.

According to local residents, there was a huge bang. “The emergency lights of all cars went off. I thought: these are not fireworks,” said a resident this morning. The explosion blew the ATM out of the wall and severely damaged the facade.

During the investigation into the bombing, the explosive was found around 3:30 PM in the Pim Mulierstraat, a few minutes away from the museum. The EOD has now secured the explosive and taken it away, reports Omrop Fryslân.

“Investigations have yet to show whether there is a connection with the burglary,” the police said. According to the police, the explosive was located near a scooter. The EOD was already at the museum this morning for investigation. The perpetrators are on the run. According to the police, it is unclear whether they took anything.

Chairman Bram Bonnema of the Kaats Museum went straight to the museum last night. “This is senseless destruction,” he said at the time. “Behind the ATM there is a display case with handball prizes. I am very concerned about what it looks like inside.” The Kaats Museum is the oldest sports museum in the Netherlands.

The chairman was not allowed to enter the building for a long time, but after the police investigation was completed he was allowed inside. “It brought tears to my eyes,” he said.

Bonnema previously thought that the museum would be closed for a few days, but now he thinks it will take weeks.
