An occasional shower, but mainly the sun shone on the heads of the Amsterdam residents who were busy preparing for King’s Day. On the Apollolaan, in the Jordaan and Watergraafsmeer the streets were in full swing to make tomorrow as good and fun as possible. And of course we stopped by café De Blaffende Vis in the Westerstraat to see what kind of royalty hangs on the facade this time.

Things are going to get going tonight, because King’s Night starts then. That is why many barrels of beer are already being driven into the Jordaan. In addition, many stalls for Saturday’s free market are already being prepared. For example, a store owner says: “I bought some bags of clothing. Hopefully we can sell them well tomorrow.”

We also worked hard in the Watergraafsmeer. For example, some boys had not gone to school to help their parents. “That went very well. Tomorrow we will also be at a stall selling stuff.”

The weather was also a topic of discussion. Although the weather seems to be quite nice, many people are still a bit nervous about a shower. “It’s the only thing you have no influence on. It will be a great party anyway.”

The Barking Fish

Tradition is of course also the facade decoration of De Blaffende Vis. This time King Willem-Alexander is dressed as Joost, the Dutch entry this year for the Eurovision Song Contest. Next to him is Queen Maxima dressed as a gabber in a house suit. Her stomach says: he is a bit thunderdom.

The royal family is always central to the decoration. For example, last year Princess Amalia was seen with the text ‘Leave me’ by Ramses Shaffy, the reason being that she could not study in Amsterdam. Former mayor Eberhard van der Laan was also once seen with the king on the facade. That was in April 2018, six months after his death.

AT5 will be live tomorrow from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Four teams will scour the city. There will also be a long report online about King’s Night during the morning. That repo can also be seen during the live broadcast.
