Excelsior reserve goalkeeper Norbert Alblas will end his career after this season. The 29-year-old North Hollander tore his cruciate ligament again last week.

“I tore my cruciate ligament twice before, so I immediately knew that something was wrong,” says Alblas on the Eredivisie club’s website. “When it happened, I immediately thought about quitting goalkeeping. I don’t believe that I will get more out of my career after my rehabilitation.”

Alblas was the second choice at Excelsior this season behind Stijn van Gassel. The North Hollander was allowed to play in the cup tournament by trainer Marinus Dijkhuizen. The 0-2 loss against FC Groningen in the eighth finals was his last appearance.

Alblas was a promising goalkeeper in his younger years. He went through the youth training of AZ and Ajax. The goalkeeper made his professional football debut with Jong Ajax. He then played goalkeeper at NEC and TOP Oss, after which he signed a contract with Excelsior in 2022.

Now Alblas will focus on a career as a trainer. “As a trainer I will do everything I can to get further than as a goalkeeper,” he says. “I aim for the highest possible.”
