BATTLE CREEK — An SUV crashed into a Dollar General Thursday morning on Capital Avenue SW, injuring the driver and significantly damaging the building, police said.

Battle Creek officers responded shortly after 4 am Thursday to a report of a vehicle that crashed into the store at 588 Capital Ave. SW.

Once on scene, police found a 2012 GMC Envoy inside the Dollar General. It appeared that the vehicle had been traveling southbound along Capital Avenue SW when the driver missed the curve in the road, right near the Dollar General, police said.

The vehicle then left the road, striking the rear of the Dollar General, and finally coming to a stop inside of the building, causing extensive damage.

Firefighters had to free the driver from the crashed vehicle. The driver, a 25-year-old man, was subsequently transported and treated at a local hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition, officials said Thursday afternoon.

Police believe that both speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, which is still under investigation.
