Cheap fuel in Germany? Don’t fall into these traps!

--

How much does petrol cost in Germany? Prices for petrol and diesel are rising rapidly in both the Netherlands and Germany. But Germany is really cheaper. Comparing the petrol price in the border region is especially fun for people who like to save money; you can easily keep 15 to 20 euros in your pocket per fill-up.

For many people in the border region, it is again attractive to refuel in Germany. The prices for diesel and petrol are considerably lower. At the end of April 2024, you will pay 2,262 euros for a liter of E10 in the Netherlands, a liter of diesel will cost 1,958 euros (source: United Consumers). No, then Germany. A liter of E10 costs an average of 1,866 euros and a liter of diesel 1,745 euros. Still, you have to be careful at the German pump.

Cheap refueling in Germany: 4 tips

1. Do not refuel before 7am

In Germany, fuel prices fluctuate considerably during the day. The difference can be as much as 10 to 12 cents! If you translate that into a full tank, you are quickly talking about a price difference of 5 euros. Refueling before 7 am is a bad idea anyway; then the price for petrol and diesel in Germany is the highest.

2. Refuel in Germany between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM

When should you refuel? After the evening rush hour, when you have had the pagers behind you, because between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. you pay the least at the German pump. This is what the ADAC, the German big brother of the ANWB, says.

3. Do not refuel on the autobahn

Cheap refueling in Germany – just like in the Netherlands – is not done on the highway. Prices for a liter of E10 petrol are on average 21.4 cents higher and for a liter of diesel even 23.8 cents. One of the reasons is that gas stations often have to be open 24 hours and therefore have higher personnel costs.

4. Refuel at an Autohof

Are you traveling and do you find the prices at the petrol stations on the autobahn too high, but do you not want to drive far to get cheap fuel? Then the Autohof is a solution. They are well signposted on the highway signs, you drive around a few kilometers at most and you pay much less for a liter of petrol or diesel. The price may differ depending on the day of the week you refuel. But according to the ADAC, these differences are negligible.

What is the petrol price in Germany in the border region?

The closer you get to Germany, the cheaper the petrol price often becomes. But once you have crossed the border and refueled in Germany, it is actually always cheaper. Still, it may be worthwhile to continue driving another 20 kilometers. The price of petrol in Germany is usually slightly higher near the border than further inland.

The petrol prices in Europe differ enormously. Germany is cheaper than the Netherlands, but if you really want to leave the gas station smiling, you have to refuel in Luxembourg.

What should I fill up with fuel, Euro 95 or E10?

You stand at the pump and wonder: what petrol should I fill up with?? What used to be euro 95 or 98 is now called E10 or E5. But in Germany you also have to pay attention to something else. Because Euro 95 (E10) is called super petrol in Germany. If you want to fill up with super petrol in Germany, you have to take the hose that says Super Plus.
