Pleasantly bizarre thriller The Tourist follows a man with no memory (Jamie Dornan) who tries to find out who he is. This stranger Fargovariant moves from Australia to Ireland in the second season.

There is no point in resisting the course of things, as Elliot (Jamie Dornan) learned in the pleasantly unpredictable first season of The Tourist. Yet he and his girlfriend, ditched detective Helen (Danielle Macdonald), seize the opportunity to learn more about the past of the sympathetic man who was a cruel criminal before his major car accident in Ireland. A letter from his former best friend could lead to answers.

But once they arrive in Ireland, everyone they meet appears to have a double agenda. In the first episode alone, people are kidnapped, assaulted, and stabbed in the eyes – and not even by Elliot. The common thread in the second series is an old feud between two Irish clans; the McDonnells and the Cassidys. Their long-running blood feud and the role that Elliot is said to have played in it, once again confronts him and his girlfriend with the question of what is more important in determining who you are: your past, whether known or not, or the person you have now become?

In the first series, the makers of the BBC hit managed to put their own spin on well-known predecessors such as Memento, Without a trace, Thelma & Louise and Fargo. The strong second season continues on this basis, although the story seems to meander more. This is no objection at all, because the clever one-liners, the crazy discoveries and the tsunami of quips about pop music (Roxette! Billy Joel! The Pretenders!) and film history (the Saw-wink with the pig carcass is hilarious) also make this new series a joy to watch.

The second season scores extra bonus points The Tourist plus for the return of some beloved idiots from the first season (such as Helen’s toxic-masculine ex Ethan, who claims to have mended his ways). And after the somewhat abrupt climax in Ireland, they manage to surprise in the last five minutes – just like in the first series – with new revelations that will make Dutch fans long for a third series.
