At least five people have been killed by falling trees during a violent storm in southern Poland. Among the dead are two children aged six and nine.

Three people, including a six-year-old child, were killed in the Polish town of Rabka Zdrój. In the nearby tourist town of Zakopane, a tree fell in front of a church on a mother and her nine-year-old child, who succumbed to his injuries.

A motorist was also killed in Zakopane after a tree fell on the car. Fallen trees also blocked several roads in the region. The fire brigade responded 140 times on Monday morning to remove it and to help homeowners with destroyed roofs, local media report.

There has been a heavy storm in southern Poland since Monday. The wind reached a speed of 155 kilometers per hour in the highest parts of the Tatra Mountains. The wind followed three days of unusually warm weather.

On Saturday, temperatures reached a new all-time record for that month. The mercury rose to 26.4 degrees in the southern city of Tarnow.
