The cyber attack that shut down the website of the province of North Brabant on Monday was claimed by a pro-Russian hacking group NoName, daily newspaper Trouw reports. The so-called DDoS attack is said to be a retaliation for support for Ukraine.
“While the Netherlands is transferring aircraft to Ukraine, we send our DDoS greetings,” the hacker group wrote on Telegram when the attack was in full swing. Research platform Investico discovered this, it had access to a group on Telegram in which cyber attacks on Western websites are claimed.
The website of the province of Brabant was temporarily inaccessible due to the DDoS attack. The site is then flooded with traffic, the server collapses under the pressure, making the website difficult or impossible to reach. The attackers do not enter the systems and therefore do not cause any damage.
The hacker collective, called ‘NoName057(16)’, began their cyber attacks on Ukrainian media in 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. But in the meantime they are also striking in countries that support Ukraine, such as the Netherlands.
The province of North Brabant is considering additional measures to prevent their website from being brought down by DDoS attacks. It is not yet clear what kind of measures these are.
The websites of Groningen, North Holland and Overijssel also went black on Monday.
