REGION > The Galecopper Bridge on the A12 near Utrecht will be completely closed to traffic on Saturday April 6, Saturday April 13 and Sunday April 14 in the direction of Arnhem from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The road under the bridge (Papendorpseweg) is therefore closed to car and bicycle traffic. Road users should take into account an additional 60 minutes of travel time. Traffic towards The Hague will not be affected by the work.

Diversions

· Traffic from Amsterdam to Arnhem will be diverted via the A1 and A27/A30 and from Rotterdam to Arnhem via the A15.

· At Utrecht, traffic detours via the N230 (Northern Randweg Utrecht) and the A27 or the A2 and A27 (see also the diversion map).

· Destination traffic is locally diverted. Cyclists take a detour via the Galecopperdijk.

Information panels and/or yellow signs indicate the diversion routes. The work may be postponed due to (weather) conditions. Rijkswaterstaat advises road users to view the current planning before departure at www.galecopperbrug.nl.

Don’t get stuck in a traffic jam

Due to the expected inconvenience, Rijkswaterstaat advises road users – where possible – to travel by public transport or bicycle. Or plan the car trip on another day.

Activities

During the closures, Rijkswaterstaat will place a new construction on one of the towers of the Galecopper Bridge towards Arnhem. In addition, pipes will be attached between the bridge deck and the new structure through which the new steel cables will run later this year.

Major maintenance until mid-2025

This work is part of major maintenance on the Galecopper Bridge near Utrecht towards Arnhem. Due to the growth of increasingly heavy freight and car traffic, the load on the bridge has increased considerably in recent decades. In addition, the steel cables that support the bridge deck are showing signs of rust on the bridge towards Arnhem. In order to ensure safe use of the bridge in the future, maintenance will take place until mid-2025. The biggest job is replacing the steel cables.

Traffic disruption in the region

In 2024, in addition to replacing the steel cables of the Galecopper Bridge, Rijkswaterstaat will carry out other major maintenance work around Utrecht. This will cause traffic disruption in the region for a longer period of time. We are renewing the road surface on large parts of the A12 and A2, carrying out renovations on various viaducts and bridges and installing new lighting in the Leidsche Rijntunnel (A2). We also carry out regular maintenance, such as asphalt repairs and green maintenance.
