Our eternal struggle against the Germans is the main topic during two AD theater shows at the end of May. Prominents from the football world, including Jan and Youri Mulder and AD’er Sjoerd Mossou, will then discuss that old rivalry.

The AD Football Podcast will hold ‘De Grote Eredivisie und EK-Abend’ on May 22 (in Leusden) and on May 29 (in Schiedam), in which the past football season will sometimes be discussed seriously, but usually with a wink. Podcast presenter Etienne Verhoeff and AD’s regular club followers, Mikos Gouka, Rik Elfrink and Maarten Wijffels, are also present. There is music by Ocobar (known for Holland Sports).

But the main course of the evening is about the upcoming European Football Championship in Germany. Jan Mulder, the former international who became a leading thinker after his football career, will highlight the football battle between the Netherlands and Germany. Youri Mulder, former striker of Schalke 04, currently commissioner there, gives an insight into today’s Germany. Of course, the Oranje’s chances are also discussed.

‘De Grote Eredivisie und EK-Abend’ of the AD Voetbalpodcast Live will be held on May 22 (in the AFAS Theater in Leusden) and on May 29 (in Theater aan de Schie in Schiedam). Tickets (from 25 euros) can be ordered at AD.nl/liveshow.

Of course, the unforgettable final tournaments of 1974 and 1988 will be discussed. Presenters Wessel Penning (58) and Sjoerd Mossou (45) also feel connected to this. Penning considers the ’74 World Cup as the moment he was born as a football fan, for Mossou everything started during the European Championship ’88.

Mossou about 1988: “I suddenly saw my calm father, who I had never heard say anything unpleasant, swearing and ranting during the semi-final against West Germany when Germany was awarded a penalty. And when Koeman took a penalty for the Netherlands a little later, my father was standing in the garden. He didn’t dare look. It is the moment when you as a child realize that something big is happening.”

After the match won by the Netherlands (1-2), dad Mossou danced indoors again with his son on his back. Later, little Sjoerd (9) received a video tape about that European Championship as a gift. He watched it so often that even the unimportant words of the commentators are still in his head. ‘And, a substitution, a public substitution for Marco van Basten. Suvrijn gets the last minutes of the match, Marco van Basten gets the applause.’ (Theo Reitsma) Or: ‘Damn, you might say, he doesn’t want to go in either!’ (Evert ten Napel)

Mossou grew up with a natural sentiment against Germans. Until later, as a young reporter for the AD during the 2006 World Cup in Germany, he met almost only friendly, hospitable eastern neighbors. Then there was room for admiration for a beautiful football country again.
