reviewWhere Godzilla and King Kong were beating each other to a pulp a year ago, the titans are now joining forces to save the world from a new monster; a monkey with dictatorial tendencies named Skar King.

As befits a decent monster movie, it says Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire full of gigantic fights, where the giant lizard absorbs so much energy that it spontaneously turns pink (Barbzilla!) and King Kong, who picked up a magical hammer in the previous film, now even gets a mechanical arm to deal even harder blows.

The biggest change that Kong and Godzilla undergo is that they look less and less like real monsters. For example, Godzilla takes cat-like naps in the Colosseum in Rome. But King Kong in particular has acquired strong human characteristics; he waves away clouds of dust, takes a quiet shower under a waterfall when he gets too dirty and if he suffers from an infected tooth, he calmly crawls back to the earth’s surface for an appointment with a specialized ‘veterinarian’. It turns the once impressive giant films into an infantile affair.

It takes a while, but the viewer is eventually rewarded with a great example of cinematic violence when the titans battle each other. Before that happens, the human heroes still look for reasons why these monsters are acting like, well, monsters. It results in lengthy monologues in which in-depth explanations are given about the history of the giants, focusing on age-old myths and feuds. It’s annoying because a movie like Godzilla x Kong needs no explanation.

Fortunately, the audience doesn’t have to think about that for too long; the pace is so fast that there is little time to get irritated by the bad story. The film is clearly made for those who enjoy visual spectacle; the cinema hall is bombarded for 2 hours with spectacular images of neon-colored titans rolling through world cities. It makes Godzilla x Kong: The New Empiredespite the constant explanation, the perfect film for an evening of popcorn munching.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opens in theaters on March 28.
