The brand new American miniseries Shogun has received many good reviews. Many fans cannot get enough of this strong series. For those fans, this Japanese series is the perfect replacement.

Since the success of Squid Game there is much more attention for Asian series and Tokyo Vice is one of them. This rock-solid series is perfect for fans of Shogun.

Tokyo Vice

Tokyo Vice is based on the book of the same name by Jake Adelstein. The book is Adelstein’s memoir of his years as the first non-Japanese journalist at Japan’s largest newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun.

The series premiered in 2022 with Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars, Baby Driver) starring as Adelstein. He shares the screen with Ken Watanabe, Rachel Keller, Hideaki Itō and Sho Kasamutsa.

The synopsis

The series is set in 1999, the year Adelstein moved to Tokyo. Here he must pass a written exam in order to be hired. Once hired, he must prove himself every day to an experienced detective who teaches him the official rule of the city: “there is not a single murder in Tokyo”.

The first season was very popular with viewers and the second season was released in February 2024. Although the series has ‘only’ 16 episodes so far, each episode lasts about an hour.
