Smoking and banging scooters, tractors and cars drive through Alblasserdam; police intervene

ALBLASSERDAM – King’s Day 2024 started in Alblasserdam with a parade of smoking and banging tractors, scooters, motorcycles and cars. About 150 young people and young adults, who left Molenlanden early in the morning, arrived in Alblasserdam around 8:30 am. The group drove via Vondellaan and Plantageweg to the roundabout at Randweg. There was a ‘pause’. There was noise being made, smoke being produced, and each other laughingly talking. A bus driver who could not continue driving and became tired of the long wait finally called the police.

In the meantime, the procession drove towards the Van Eesterensingel and stopped there again. A tractor collided with a car of one of the participants on the Plantageweg, but that ended well without any injuries.

Two police officers arrived on the scene near the Van Eesterensingel. Initially, stop signs were entered and a driver’s license was requested, but when it became apparent that this was going to be a tough fight with such a force majeure of participants, everyone was told to keep driving. This allowed the bus driver and the rest of the traffic to continue their journey with some delay.

The parade then continued towards Dam Square and Polderstraat. The group has now left for Oud-Alblas and Bleskensgraaf.

In various municipalities in the Netherlands, Luilak is also celebrated on King’s Day. This was also celebrated in Alblasserdam until a few years ago, but this did not happen on King’s Day but on the Saturday before Pentecost. For several years now, almost nothing has been done on Lazy for Pentecost and the ‘lazy group’ during King’s Day is getting bigger every year.
