The number of whooping cough cases among young children continues to increase. This is the highest level in years, Nivel research institute reported on Wednesday.
Last week, 31 in every 100,000 children aged four years or younger presented to their GP with whooping cough, according to Nivel’s weekly figures.
Whooping cough is very contagious and can lead to coughing fits that can last for months. Infection can also cause pneumonia. The disease is especially dangerous for babies.
For example, sick babies become exhausted from coughing, causing them to stop drinking. Coughing can also lead to a lack of oxygen. “This can cause brain damage,” the RIVM writes on its website.
The RIVM reported a few weeks ago that at least four babies died from whooping cough in February and March. It is exceptional that so many deaths have been reported so early in the year. Normally there are a few deaths per year.
Women can be vaccinated against whooping cough during pregnancy. This protects the newborn baby. Babies can also receive an injection against whooping cough.
