Last week, the police of the Nieuwe Haven station, together with the Motor Surveillance Service (MSD) and Automatic Number Plate Registration System (ANRS) departments, held a large-scale security check in the context of ‘Operation Zero Tolerance’ in Suriname.

During the inspection, where drivers were ordered to follow the traffic jam during the inspection, a bus driver took matters into his own hands. He ran from the bus, leaving it with the engine running and passengers on board.

The police also noted various violations, including:

  • Not having a driver’s license
  • Driving outside the established category
  • Expired inspections and insurance
  • No bus permit

In addition to the fines imposed on the spot, 24 drivers who had already been convicted for previous offenses were also stopped. They were given the opportunity to pay their outstanding fines on the spot, by paying in cash or via POS device.

A total of SRD 14,025 was collected in fines, which were paid by the convicted directors. The amount of summary proceedings that still have to be settled by the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service has been set at SRD 79,600.

The police warn drivers to adhere to traffic rules. “Your safety is important, but also that of other road users.”

‘Operation Zero Tolerance’ takes strict action against offenders to ensure safety on the road. The action is part of the police’s continuous efforts to increase road safety in the Nieuwe Haven district.

More such checks will take place in the coming period, the police report.
