De Held III will be a modern family neighborhood, with a green character and a wide range of (affordable) homes. The municipality expects to build the first of a total of 1,850 homes in 2027. With this number, the new district makes a significant contribution to Groningen’s housing ambitions and needs.

The municipality of Groningen and the Groninger Projecten CV (GPCV) have signed the outline agreement for De Held III. “This is an important step for the development of the new residential area on the northwestern edge of the city,” the municipality said. The outline agreement follows years of discussions about the development of the area between Gravenburg and De Held. The plan area consists of three parts: north, center and south.

The starting point is building in balance with nature and ecology. With a recognizable mound structure, the history of the area as a mound landscape forms the basis for the plan. In this structure, residential areas, the mounds, are elevated in the landscape and almost all homes have an address on the green.

1,850 homes

The plan is to realize 1,850 homes at De Held III, of which 150 to 200 are to be built per year. The housing program is diverse: 30 percent social housing, 20 percent affordable housing and 50 percent private sector. The central area will have a facilities center.

The plan also includes a new neighborhood park between the existing school near Gravenburg and a new sports park on the northeast side of the plan area, between Reitdiepsplein and the allotments. A main access route, a public transport connection and a network of cycle and pedestrian paths make the area accessible.

With the development of De Held III, the existing districts of De Held and Gravenburg will be linked together. Due to the division into land ownership and the lack of access, an integrated area development was chosen.

In the short term, the concept urban development framework, the principles and the planning will be shared with local residents and other stakeholders during drop-in meetings.
