The start of Operation Ring Zuid has started well, reports Groningen Bereikbaar. The expected traffic in the first week was not too bad.

In the early weekend, several driving directions were closed and the temporary road between Assen and Hoogezand and vice versa was put into use. The southern ring road then closed between Vrijheidsplein and Julianaplein. The traffic lights on Julianaplein have been removed for good. This phase lasts until April 26.

However, according to Groningen Bereikbaar, the lack of traffic offers no guarantee for the next five months. “The nice (cycling) weather undoubtedly helped during the first few days.”

There was drug use on the N355 from Zuidhorn, on Stationsweg and on Laan Corpus den Hoorn, around the Martini Hospital. Motorists who do not need to be in the vicinity of the Martini Hospital or Main Station are asked to follow the official diversion routes. Traffic flows better on the Ring East, North and West, so emergency services and public transport are not hindered.

The new exit at Leonard Springerlaan (Martiniplaza) has also been opened, but according to Groningen Bereikbaar, not everyone is aware of this yet. This route may also provide relief for Laan Corpus den Hoorn.
