‘Dog woke up from false notes’

Just before the Easter weekend, the Netherlands turned out en masse in front of the TV again last night The Passion. The NPO 1 spectacle caused quite a stir on social media and that was not purely positive this year. Angela Schijf in particular faced fierce criticism because of her singing skills. Matteo van der Grijn and Keizer were applauded.

It was already the fourteenth edition of the KRO-NCRV program about the passion story of Jesus Christ. Last year viewers thought it was the most beautiful Passion since years.

Leading roles for William Spaaij and Angela Schijf

Leading roles in the edition of The Passion This year were reserved for William Spaaij (Jesus), Angela Schijf (Maria), Matteo van der Grijn (Petrus) and rapper Keizer (Judas). Other major roles were played by Matteo van der Grijn (Petrus), Gaia Aikman (Maria Magdalena). Writer Kluun was the narrator.

Spaaij previously said that he did not have to think long about his participation. “Less than a second,” he told the news agency ANP. “I’ve wanted this for a long time. I think for ten seasons.” Those around him also thought it was something for him. “I kept hearing: ‘Isn’t that something for you?’ There were even people who thought I had already played in it.” The actor has seen most editions of the performance and has drawn inspiration from them. “There have been an incredible number of good Jesuses before me.”

Keizer also immediately thought it was a great idea to participate. Disk had to think a little longer. “It is such a great and honorable production that it did not happen overnight. They Passion is unique of its kind, also for Dutch television and it is such a unifying event. It is unique if you can be part of that.”

Nicol Kremers played Barabbas in The Passion

Reality star Nicol Kremers played Barabbas this year. Barabbas, the prisoner who is released instead of Jesus, is often played by someone who was discredited the year before. In previous years, Barabbas was played by, among others, Louisa Janssen, Dennis Schouten, Famke Louise, Ben Saunders and Yuri van Gelder.

The 33-year-old Kremers was in the news a lot because of her past relationship with Peter Gillis. They were seen together in the SBS reality series for years Mass is Cash, but have now broken up. Several lawsuits are underway between Kremers and Gillis, including an assault case. The manager of holiday parks is said to have bitten Kremers on her back and nose, among other things.

The Passion is traditionally told using Dutch songs. Music from Goldband, De Dijk, Nick & Simon and Henk Westbroek, among others, was featured this year. For the latter it was a dream come true. Schijf sang his hit Even your name is pretty (1998). “This year can’t go wrong anymore. After years of waiting in vain, I finally have a song in The Passion“Writes Westbroek on X.

The level of singing in the spectacle was eagerly discussed on X this year. Schijf in particular sang out of tune, according to viewers. “Angela Schijf can normally sing, but what is happening here? Seems like she doesn’t hear the music,” someone wrote.

Many people are positive about her acting skills. “Angela’s singing may be a bit weaker, but the acting more than makes up for it,” he said. Another: “Angela Schijf is a phenomenal actress. It’s crazy how that emotion bursts into the living room insane!”

According to viewers, Keizer was one of the standouts. He is flooded with words of praise for X. “The star of the evening,” says one viewer. “Really all praise for Keizer!” says another. “Completely new to acting, but doing fantastic.” Van der Grijn also scored well, according to viewers. “What a fantastic throat Matteo van der Grijn (Petrus) has.”
